Post-Midterm/Post-Thanksgiving Update

It's probably about time that I post something here.  There is certainly enough to write about.

Midterms finally got over a little over a week ago.  Some went better than others (I think - I still need to get some back), but they don't matter that much.  Their main purpose is to prepare me for the qualifying exam next fall.  Finals are coming up in a little over a week, so I will have a lot of studying to do.

Teaching is going well.  However, I do hope that I get a lecture position next quarter just so I can experience both roles.

For Thanksgiving, a bunch of physics graduate students (and some from other disciplines) got together for a potluck dinner.  It always amazes me what students are able to whip together.  After dinner, some of us headed down to Pacific Beach to hang out around a fire.  I love San Diego.

To answer Cat's question, no, I do not miss snow.  I'm sure two weeks of it will be enough to satisfy me.  No, I do not miss the leaves changing because they change here, too (this surprised me, too).  There are some really beautiful trees next to the undergraduate physics labs.  I'll try to get a picture of them when I go to work next week.  The cool thing is that because we don't have high winds, heavy rain, or snow, the leaves take their time changing and falling.  You get to enjoy them for more than a week or two.

Looks like its been a month since I last posted.  My bad.

Classes are going fairly well.  There is a lot of homework, and much of it is non-trivial, but I'm managing.  Midterms are coming up in the next couple weeks, which is going to be interesting, but the good news is that shortly after midterms my parents are coming to visit for a weekend.

I'm slowly having my textbooks shipped down here.  At least now I have enough to feel like a proper physics graduate student.  I could use more, though.  One can never have enough textbooks in one's bookcase.

And so it begins

Classes started yesterday, but things are starting out slowly.  My Quantum Mechanics class was canceled in the morning (sleep in!) and the Physics Colloquium was canceled for a welcome picnic for the physics department (free food!).  The one remaining class, Mathematical Physics, went over stuff I had already covered in my Complex Variables course at UST.  The homework made me wish I had my textbook from that class with me until I looked at the lecture notes to see what we hadn't covered.

Before class, my roommates and I got free pizza on the library walk (I didn't pay for a meal yesterday).  We ate our lunch next to Dr. Suess and the Cat in the Hat.  Afterwards, I took a couple pictures.

Fridays, I normally would have to TA a lab in the morning, but since it is the first week, I get another morning to sleep in.  I did have to get up a little early in order to start the beef stew I'm making for supper.
